HIGH POINT — Millennium Charter Academy students traveled Friday to High Point to the Guilford County Courthouse to participate in the third annual Justice Iredell Middle School Mock Trial Tournament.

The tournament is held in 10 locations across the state by the Law-Related Education Advisory Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation. Three regional champions and the top overall scoring team will be selected and contacted on or before Dec. 12 and those four teams advance to the state championship on Jan. 11 at the N.C. Bar Center in Cary.

Friday, Millennium was scheduled to compete against Brown Summit Middle and Northern Middle of Greensboro with Jon Ward serving as presiding judge. Thirty teams representing 24 schools were scheduled to compete statewide, using 10 courthouses and 15 courtrooms.

According to North Carolina Bar Association Director of Communications Russell Rawlings, a total of 475 students were involved in the competition along with 32 volunteer coaches, 37 teachers and 70 volunteers serving as scorers or presiding judges. Rawlings’ information indicated 600 people participated in the event.

Six schools represented by nine teams comprise the Western Region (Mountains, Northwest and Central Piedmont). 15 schools represented by 16 teams comprised the Central Region (Triad, Triangle and Sandhills). Three schools represented by five teams comprised the Eastern Region (Northeast, Central and Southeast Coasts). Metrolina Regional Scholars’ Academy of Charlotte had teams in both Central and Western Regions.
