A Lowgap woman has been arrested and charged with numerous offenses after allegedly stealing checks from the elderly and cashing them at banks in Hillsville, Va.
Vickie Haynes Sizemore was arrested on Sept. 4 by Sgt. James Alderman with the Hillsville Police Department and charged with forgery, uttering, and obtaining money by false pretenses.
Sizemore allegedly was involved in the theft of a local elderly person’s checks, then cashing them at local banks in Hillsville, Alderman said. After Alderman notified Carroll County Deputy Joe Holderfield of a suspected similar situation at another elderly person’s residence in the Fancy Gap, where Sizemore was employed as an aide for an elderly person, the two officers apprehended her on the Hillsville warrants.
Authorities allegedly found stolen articles from the first theft in Sizemore’s possession after the arrest. Property believed to belong to the second elderly individual taken by Sizemore was also recovered by Holderfield as a result of this investigation.
Alderman and interim Hillsville Police Chief Jason Hawks discovered that more checks from the second elderly victim had been stolen and cashed in Hillsville. Alderman and Hawks said they became concerned for the second party as the investigation progressed and they notified family members, who immediately checked recent bank transactions and found several of them to be bogus.
The investigation by both law enforcement agencies continues.
Anyone who has allowed this Sizemore to assist with an elderly person is requested to check bank records and contact local law enforcement if any discrepancies or thefts are discovered. Neither the sheriff’s office nor the police department would release the names of the victims.
