North Surry High School’s construction and masonry classes worked in the Kids Zone at Reeves Community Center on Friday tearing up the carpet before putting down new carpet and tile as part of the Lowe’s Heroes project sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement.
With the help of some students from North Surry High School and Lowe’s Home Improvement, Reeves Community Center is getting a facelift.
Lowe’s Heroes is a company-wide project which allows local Lowe’s Home Improvement stores to team up with the community and complete a project. This year, the Kids Zone room is the project of choice and construction and masonry students from North Surry are teaming up to refurbish the room.
They spent all day on Friday tearing out the carpet in the room which was put down in 1989. Then, they put down new carpet in half of the room, put down tile on the other half and resurfaced the springboard floor.
“We came to help out Lowe’s with its community project for Lowe’s Heroes. They provide most of the materials and we just come do the work,” said Nathan Gunter, a senior at the high school. “We want to give back to the community. We are getting the opportunity to come out and give back to and help out our community.”
Being a part of the construction or masonry program at the high school prepared them for the task at hand. They were already aware of the safety precautions in place and were able to work efficiently.
It took them only a few short hours to take out the old carpet and clean up the debris. By 11 a.m., they were bringing in the new carpeting and the tiles to be placed. The students were planning to work until around 2 or 2:30 p.m. in order to return to school in time for the end of the day.
“We jumped right in and got most of the carpet pulled up,” said Gunter. “We’ll be here all day working.”
RCC was chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s project because of the Lowe’s corporate headquarters’ desire to have the projects affect as many community members as possible, according to Neil Cothren, store manager for the local branch.
“We wanted to work together with North Surry and Reeves to get the community to improve this facility,” he said. “We just want to try to do everything we can to contribute to something they needed. It’s a good opportunity to help people who support our store. We want to thank the people who have helped us in the store.”
