PILOT MOUNTAIN — Some local principals have received pampering following action by the Surry County Board of Education to recognize the contributions of school principals in the school system.
The action was passed in connection with the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Elementary School Principals declaring October as National Principals’ Month.
One local example of recognizing a principal’s contributions was held at Pilot Mountain Elementary School with a Pamper Your Principal Day held on Tuesday for Principal Angela Carson.
The staff realized that because of bad weather changing the dates of a cheerleading competition for Sawyer’s ten-year old daughter, Elizabeth, and a Pilot Mountain Cardinal football game for seven-year old son, Hall, she was going to miss visiting her beloved Holden Beach in North Carolina.
Media Coordinator Amy Harpe, other teachers, custodians and teaching assistants created tropical-themed signs of her favorite restaurant, The Silver Hill Grill, and made a Beach Mart sign, where they said Carson will one day work at after retiring. They also made a bookworm sculpture and crowned Carson in a surprise reception held in her honor.
“We do things yearly to honor the executive assistant as well as the principal,” said Harpe. “We wanted to do something really specific to her interests for Principal Carson.”
Carson appeared to truly be surprised as she was led into the classroom decorated with palm trees and banners.
“For them to pull this off without me knowing was really something. I was shocked and surprised,” Carson said after she was crowned. “I was overwhelmed. I get up and come to work at the best job anywhere every day. I am lucky to have the best and hardest working staff anyone can have.”
The 22-year veteran, who has been a principal for 15 years, said she has seen the role of a principal gradually change into more of an administrator who monitors what is taught and tested and concentrates on making leaders of teachers and staff as well as making sure they have what they need to educate students.
Schoolwide activities were not isolated to Pilot Mountain Elementary. Pilot Mountain Middle School decorated Principal Lorrie Sawyers’ office door with inspirational messages of gratitude for her support. Sawyers said this was her favorite part of being honored.
Sawyers was also presented with flowers and Shannon Lane of the Parent Teacher Organization baked two dozen cupcakes in apple cinnamon or pineapple flavors and presented them to Sawyers. She also received a free Nutty Buddy ice cream cone from the cafeteria staff.
White Plains Elementary Principal Sandra Scott and executive assistant Amber Flippen received thank-you notes from each employee and students wrote messages on a banner that was presented to Scott. Faculty and staff also brought a covered dish for a special lunch in her honor.
The Surry Early College High School honored Principal Celia Hodges with refreshments from the Parent Teacher Organization on Oct. 15 and a different grade will be honoring her with a special project weekly as well as the staff giving her a different gift weekly. This week the ninth grade and yearbook class are writing her letters and arranged a scavenger hunt for her. She will also be featured in an article the tenth grade class will print in the schools weekly paper.
Shoals honored Principal Tracy Lewis and assistant principal Donna Bledsoe with Pandora charms and a special cake. Each grade level was also asked to do something such as a card or small gift for Bledsoe.
