This is the new library card for any library in the Northwest Regional Library System. September is National Library Card Sign-up Month.
The library has more to offer these days than just books and free DVD rentals, and because September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, the Mount Airy Library is promoting all it has to offer.
From educational and fun programs for all ages, to free movies and classes, the library has something for everyone, said Pat Gwyn, branch librarian at the Mount Airy Public Library.
“We are making extra efforts to promote programs and stressing the importance of using the library,” said Gwyn.
The Northwest Regional Library System has a new logo for its library cards and on its website. Gwyn said they are promoting the card as, “The Smartest Card.”
“It’s a card for every wallet. This is a resource for everyone,” said Gwyn.
In addition to checking out books, DVDs can be checked out for free as well. Gwyn said thanks to some donations, the library has many newer movies that can be checked out. In addition, the library offers books on CD. She said those are popular among people who like to listen books while driving or doing chores around the house.
The computer offers the use of computers for free as well. For those who aren’t familiar with computers, she said, there are employees there who are able to help. The library also offers computers designed especially for children to use.
Every week, the library offers a preschool story time. On Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., there is a story time for 2-year-olds, and at 10:30 a.m., the 3-year-olds have story time. The 4- and 5-year-olds have story time on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Every Thursday at 7 p.m., the library hosts a bedtime story time.
“We encourage them to wear their pajamas so that after story time, they can go home and go to bed,” said Gwyn.
During September, the library will be showing, classic chick flicks for Movie Mondays starting on Sept. 10 when “Fried Green Tomatoes” will be shown at 6 p.m. Movies will continue on Sept. 17 and 24.
Each Wednesday during the month, the library will be showing Lonesome Dove episodes at 6 p.m. The library makes popcorn for movie nights.
Also on Wednesdays, from 4 to 5 p.m., there will be ancestry.com training for those who want to learn more about researching genealogy.
There is a new Live and Learn series starting at the library this month. On Sept. 10 at 1 p.m., Tim Marion will offer a program on how to make a simple budget.
A creative writing class will be offered on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. That class is open to all ages.
“We want to let everyone know that the library is here for them and we want everyone to enjoy the services that we have to offer,” said Gwyn.
A new program the library is offering called Speed Book Dating will begin on Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. She said this is for singles who want to meet others that enjoy reading. She said each person should bring a book that they love whether it be a childhood favorite or their all-time favorite book. Each person who comes will be paired with another person and they will have five minutes to discuss why they love their book, then they will talk to another person about their book, and so on.
Also, voting for the Lego Duplo Read!Build!Play! contest continues until Oct. 1. Gwyn encourages everyone to vote every day. She said it only takes about 30 seconds to vote. The winning library receives $5,000. The top 200 libraries get early literacy tool kits. Voting is online at www.readbuildplay.com.
The library will be closed on Monday for Labor Day.
