Kyson Jenkins gets his turn to tell Santa about his Christmas wish list. The North Pole’s number one citizen visited the Mount Airy Public Library’s Christmas Story Time on Friday.
The Mount Airy Public Library again filled its conference room with its annual Christmas story time with Santa on Friday. Angela Llewellyn of the library read a selection of books including “Bless You Santa” which brought up the possibility of Mr. Claus having to take a day off because of a cold.
The children and all of Santa’s helpers were not disappointed when the North Pole’s number one citizen appeared to draw the names of children who won prizes and to share in the milk and cookies with participants. Llewellyn said the library also is looking forward to a full slate of events in the upcoming year.
The library has scheduled an e-book download demonstration day on Jan. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their Kindle or other electronic readers to this class with them as well as cords and passwords so they can learn how to download digital books on their computer, smartphone, iPod or e-books. The library also plans on having a variety of e-books and digital audiobooks available to patrons.
The library also will have young actors workshops on Tuesdays in January at 4 p.m. The workshops are for children ages 7 to 18 years and no acting experience is necessary. A winter carnival has been planned for Jan. 26 at the library at 11 a.m. and will feature a variety of games, stories and a craft which children can make. The Bright Star Theatre also will perform “Aesop’s Fables” on Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. at the library.
The theater company will perform a fast-paced, energetic performance of “The Fox and the Grapes,” “The Tortoise and the Hare,” “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “The Lion and the Mouse.” The plays focus on tales of honesty, compassion, hard work and kindness.
Additionally, the library invites children to gather on the second Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. to perform science experiments free. It is being billed as the event for all aspiring mad scientists to attend.
Llewellyn also provided information inviting participants in the Northwest Regional Library seventh annual photography contest. Participants may call or visit public libraries in Stokes, Surry, Alleghany and Yadkin Counties for more information including details of rules and prizes. The contest includes juvenile, teen and adult categories. Branch libraries will accept entries through Feb. 22.
