WILKESBORO — Surry Central’s girls basketball team improved to 2-0 with a hot-shooting 74-59 win over Wilkes Central Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles posted 18 and 20 points in the first two quarters, then showed that was no fluke by scoring 16 and 20 in the third and fourth quarters.

Cassidy Joyner led the Eagles with 23 points, while point guard Tess Dockery hit both of her long jumpers on the way to 11 points and three assists.

Courtney Hegler hit her only three-point try of the night as she amassed 15 points, eight boards, six steals, three assists and a blocked shot. Joyner also had five steals and three assists to go with three boards.

Sarah Bruce scored 10 points with four rebounds as the Golden Eagles had four players in double figures.

Kristin Key added six points, Marlee Wilmoth five and Brooke Lewis four. Brittany Lewis didn’t score, but helped out on defense with three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.

Wilmoth had three steals as Surry Central tallied 16 for the game.

“The whole team made a strong defensive stand and I credit Brooke Lewis for stepping up in the second half. I gave her the responsibility to stop the other team’s best player and she did,” said Surry Central Head Coach Mandy Holt.

Tonight the Lady Eagles travel to Wheatmore High in Trinity to take on Reagan in a holiday “showcase” tournament called the Headliners Challenge. Holt said the team participated in the event last year and found it “very challenging” and an opportunity to improve the team’s competitive edge early in the season.

“Our chemistry is starting to click,” said Holt.

Next Tuesday, the Golden Eagles play Starmount away and East Wilkes at home.

Northwest Conference play opens on Dec. 4 at Bishop McGuinness.
