KING — The Mount Airy Lady Bears defeated the West Stokes Wildcats on the road Tuesday and clinched their first conference win.
The game’s final score was 63-53, said Lady Bears Head Coach Howard Mayo. The team is now 1-1 in the conference and are 5-1 overall.
The girls led the first quarter with 15 points to the Wildcats’ eight. They went into the halftime with the Bears up 30-21.
“I liked the pace and tempo of our girls in the first half,” said Mount Airy Head Coach Howard Mayo. Mayo said Wildcats’ Abby Harris hit two three-pointers in a row to make the score Bears 40-39 going into the fourth.
Mayo said with one minute and 45 seconds to go, Lady Bear Kathyrn Beasley made a 12-footer bringing the score to Bears 53-51, Mayo said.
West Stokes then turned the ball over and Lady Bear Alex Atkins made both free throw shots bringing the score to 55-51. Mayo said the Cats made a few more turnovers in the fourth and the Bears capitalized on them in a team effort.
Wildcat Chris Maddigan was high game scorer with 35 points, Mayo said.
The Bears scorers were: Kathryn Beasley, 16 points, 11 rebounds; Alex Atkins, 11; Mikala Seivers 11 and six assists; Dana Brown, three; Davi Barbour six; Symone Simmons five; Skylar Flippen, two points; and Ayano Shelton, two.
