DOBSON — The Surry Community College volleyball team defeated Lenoir Community College, 3-0, in Region X volleyball action Sunday. The Knights started strong, taking the first game by a count of 25-8 after leading 11-1 to start the match. Surry began the second set in similar fashion, racing to a 9-0 lead before capturing the game, 25-13. The Knights finished off the match in the third set, breaking an 18-18 tie behind solid serving from Caitlin Voigt and winning 25-20.

“We came out and started strong,” said Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “Getting off to a quick start was a big key for us.”

Surry was led offensively by Megan Stanley and Cassie Durham with 10 kills each. Stanley added 11 digs and a service ace, while Durham added two blocks. Mallorie Vogler contributed eight kills and eight digs, while adding a service ace. Patty Murphy had six kills and Amber Owens notched three kills and two blocks. Surry’s Alyssa Parker recorded 22 assists and added three service aces while teammate Caitlin Voigt contributed 10 assists and four service aces. Defensively for the Knights, Tori Nelson and Taylor Moxley each notched five digs.

“We had a good effort from everyone,” added Marion-Kiser. “Hopefully, we will have a big crowd for our final home match on Tuesday.” Surry (17-5) wraps up the regular season on Tuesday by hosting Rockingham in a Region X match starting at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Surry defeated Brunswick Community College, 3-1, in a Region X matchup. The Knights took game one, 26-24, behind stellar play from middle hitter Cassie Durham. Durham finished with a team-high 15 kills and added three digs and three blocks. The Dolphins knotted the match by taking game two, 25-23. Surry then rebounded by taking game three, 25-16, behind a strong performance from outside hitter Megan Stanley. Stanley finished the match with 12 kills and 17 digs.

Surry finished off the match by taking the fourth set, 25-18, behind outside hitter Mallorie Vogler, who finished the match with 13 kills, two service aces and 19 digs.

“We played well at times,” said Marion-Kiser. “Our entire team played together and supported each other.”

Amber Owens finished the contest with eight kills, six blocks and one assist, while Patty Murphy added six kills, four digs, six blocks and two assists. Hannah Fulk also recorded one kill, three digs, one assist and three blocks.

Defensively, libero Brittany Draughn notched a team-high 24 digs while adding one kill and a service ace.

Both setters for Surry turned in solid performances with Alyssa Parker recording 26 assists and adding five digs and a service ace. Teammate Caitlin Voigt added 23 assists and seven digs.

“It was a good team effort,” said Marion-Kiser. “Everyone was focused and ready to play.”
