DOBSON — Mr. Franklin Eugene Koehl Jr., 78, of Dobson, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, after an extended illness. He was born in Washington, D.C., on March 8, 1934, to the late Franklin Eugene Koehl Sr. and Frances Attaway Koehl Crabtree. Mr. Koehl was a retired DJ from WPAQ radio station known as Al Ferguson and was of the Protestant faith. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served our country during the Korean War, and a proud member of the National Hobo Association and known as Danville Dan-the Singing Hobo. Survivors include his ex-wife, Karen Koehl of Dobson; two daughters, Kathy Koehl Smith of Hillsville, Va., and Sheila Koehl and husband, Richard Castillo, of Alton, Ill.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky E. and Jenny Koehl of Georgia, David L. and Shawn of Michigan, Terry L. and Mitzi Koehl of Mount Airy and Billy A. Koehl of Dobson; two daughters-in-law, Jo Ann Koehl of Michigan and Patty Koehl of Dobson; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Koehl was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret A. Koehl Carter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Hobo Foundation, P.O. Box 143, Britt, IA 50423. The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver, Teresa Patton, and the staff of Carolina Select for their loving and compassionate care. There will be no formal services. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Koehl family.
