KING — X-rays were negative late Friday night for a senior co-captain on the Mount Airy football team.
A win over conference foe West Stokes should have been cause for celebration, but the Bears’ jubilation was cut short when Benji Hicks went to the ground.
Father Tony Hicks said that Benji couldn’t catch his breath at the end of the game.
Coach Kelly Holder accompanied the family to a hospital and said that the senior lineman had pain in his sternum, and doctors were checking to see if it was fractured.
Tony Hicks said early Saturday that the sternum was just bruised.
Hicks posted a thank you on Facebook to all the people who joined the family at the hospital and all the friends who showed concern.
Mom Kristine added, “Our team, coaches, principal and friends were all there by our side.”
Benji Hicks plays on both the offensive and defense lines and stands 6-foot-1 and 251 lbs. Hicks also plays varsity basketball.
The family believes that Benji could play again as soon as this Friday at home against Surry Central.
