Two-legged county residents aren’t the only ones celebrating Halloween this year.

An event planned for Saturday at Petsense is set to allow four-legged residents to get in on the action as well.

This year’s Pet Costume Contest is set to begin at 10 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. at 692 S. Andy Griffith Parkway in Mount Airy.

The event will feature trick-or-treating for the “furry kids,” a bake sale and a raffle.

The contest is being sponsored by both Petsense and Mayberry 4 Paws, an organization that advocates for spaying and neutering in the county.

During the pet-friendly event, information on available assistance to help residents spay and neuter their pets will be available.

This year’s costume contest will begin at noon, and organizers plan to award first, second and third-place prizes for the best costume.

In addition, county residents will be able to adopt a pet on site, according to Michelle Edwards with Mayberry 4 Paws.

Edwards said that not only is the event going to be fun for both two and four-legged residents, there is a good message behind it as well.

“We hope everyone will come out to Petsense on Saturday… and join in the fun,” she said. “Mayberry 4 Paws is especially interested in getting out information on the importance of spaying or neutering your pets.

“We work very hard to address the problem of the thousands of pets dying each year at the Surry County Animal Shelter, (and) pet owners can help address this problem by having their pets fixed.”
