North Surry stopped South Stokes’ two-match winning streak in golf with a five-stroke win Wednesday.
The Lady Greyhounds have been neck-and-neck with East Surry for second place behind the Sauras.
This week, the Hounds used the home-course advantage to shoot a 141 at the par-36 Cross Creek Country Club.
Kasie Tolbert blistered the course for a 2-over 38, six shots better than the next closest player.
With clear skies, little wind and softened greens, the course could have been ripe for shooting a low score. However, there seemed to be some rust showing for many players.
No one’s had much of a chance to practice with all the rain, noted Bear Coach Tommye Phillips.
North’s Gatlin Hiatt shot a 51, good for sixth place, and teammate Sarah Holleman was right behind with a 52 to tie for seventh place.
Neither of them was happy with their scores, but the greens were really slow from all the rain, said North Coach Daniel Johnson.
As for Tolbert, Johnson said the player still has room for improvement. She three-putted on three different holes and still shot a 38, he said.
The Hounds as a whole showed that they could use some extra practice on putting and on bunker play, the coach said.
South Stokes shot a 146 with Brooke Martin finishing second at 44, Megan Mabe tied for fourth with 50, and Brooke Kiger tied for seventh with 52.
East Surry was just one stroke behind the Sauras. Madison Moore was third at 45, Whitney Cox was tied at fourth with 50, and Elizabeth Shelton was tied at seventh with 52.
Mount Airy finished fourth with a 176, and Surry Central was fifth with a 185.
“I see improvement every week,” Phillips said of the Lady Bears. “We’re steadily getting better. I’m very happy with our progress.”
In order to qualify for participation in the regional tournament, a player must shoot 55 on a course in conference play, noted Phillips. Catherine Scott qualified with a 55 Wednesday.
Next week, the conference match moves back to Pilot Knob Park as East Surry is the host school.
