North Surry’s season came to a close Friday night with a 34-10 loss to visiting West Stokes.
The Greyhounds (1-10, 1-6) got a 75-yard scoring run from quarterback Joston Phipps and a 35-yard field goal from Jacob Hauser.
“I thought we played our best game of the second half of the season,” North Surry coach Brian Hampton said. “I really felt like we competed tonight and we wanted to send our six seniors out on a high note and our guys really battled to do that.”
Hampton wrapped up his first season as head coach. The Greyhounds had to adjust to their new coach as he implemented new offensive and defensive philosophies. The coach also had to get used to his players.
Injuries also slowed the Greyhounds. Quarterback Tanner Hiatt sat last night because of a concussion he suffered two weeks ago. All in all, it was a trying season.
“This team faced more adversity than any team I’ve been associated with,” Hampton said. “We battled the flu, we had injuries. It’s been a week-to-week thing finding out who’s in what spot. I know our record doesn’t show it, but we made strides.”
North Surry could bounce back in a big way next season. This year’s junior class included stellar players in Phipps, Hiatt and running back Terry Adams. Add to that a junior varsity team that played well.
“We have just got to do some work up front, get stronger and if we can improve up front and keep our core together and improve, I think we’ll be competitive next year,” Hampton said.
