DOBSON — Surry Central stretched a 1-0 halftime lead into a 4-1 soccer win over Bishop McGuinness Thursday.
“Bishop is down a little bit this year, but they are still very well coached,” said Coach Blake Roth. “I was very pleased with the way we were able to control them.”
The Golden Eagles improved to 11-2-2, while the Villains fell below .500 at 7-8-1.
In the 10th minute Adrian Gonzalez passed to Osber Valle for the only score of the first half.
Then eight minutes into the second half, Juan Lopez centered the ball to Valle, who booted it in with his left foot.
Not bad for a kid making his first start on varsity, Roth said as the second goal was scored.
In the 54th minute, Justo Cristobal scored off a pinball melee. He controlled a deflection and shot the ball from about 25 yards away and five defenders and a keeper in his way. Somehow the ball still found a way through the traffic.
In the 63rd minute, Gonzales got Central’s last goal.
“I thought we played fairly well tonight,” said Roth. “I was disappointed that the bench couldn’t hold the shutout.”
With about six minutes left, a scramble ensued off a throw-in, and the Villains punched it home.
“Jose (Avalos) was still out serving a suspension — he’ll be back now,” the coach said.
The Golden Eagles are still second in the Northwest Conference to West Stokes. Next week, the team is on the road for three games.
The Eagles travel to South Stokes on Monday, East Surry on Tuesday and North Surry on Thursday.
