Local pet owners have the opportunity to get their dogs cleaned up and support an animal-rescue organization at the same time during an event Saturday.

Tractor Supply Inc. on U.S. 601 in Mount Airy will host a dog wash beginning at 9 a.m., which will benefit Surry Animal Rescue. It is a non-profit volunteer group dedicated to aiding pets that are abused, neglected or otherwise in need of help.

The price list for Saturday’s service includes washing small or medium dogs for $5, $8 for larger dogs and $10 to give extra-large canines a bath. Nails can be trimmed for an additional $5.

All proceeds will go to Surry Animal Rescue in support of its mission. Director Linda Mooney, who founded the organization in 2001, said it logs between 350 and 400 rescues per year.

Surry Animal Rescue took a hit to its finances in July, when someone stole what was believed to be several hundred dollars from a collection box at Creekside Cinemas.

The Mount Airy Police Department investigated the crime, but no arrests have been reported.

Another event involving the rescue group is planned Saturday at Cross Creek Country Club, which will host a first-ever dog show from noon to 3 p.m. in the club’s atrium section.

It will include police-dog and other demonstrations, along with a display of animals available for adoption. A doggie fashion show is scheduled for 1 p.m., open only to country club members. However, anyone is invited to bring their dogs to the gathering.

The event is free and open to the public, but donations for Surry Animal Rescue will be welcomed.

Mooney said local pet owners are encouraged to make a day of it by attending the dog wash as well as the show at Cross Creek Country Club.
