DOBSON — The Surry Knights gave up two unearned runs in the top of the ninth to fall to Danville Community College Sunday.

SCC and Danville split a doubleheader on Saturday and played a close rubber game on Sunday.

The defense let the pitchers down a few times, said assistant coach Tim Collins. There were some lapses, wrong locations, he noted.

Starter Colby Dishmond pitched out of some tough situations to keep it close for his six innings.

SCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Collins said. Then Danville answered with a couple of runs to tie the game in the second.

In the third inning, Danville loaded the bases with nobody out. Dishmond managed to get out of the inning without allowing anyone to cross home plate.

It stayed 2-2 through the sixth inning. The Knights did have runners aboard in the bottom of the sixth, but the last out came on a fly ball.

Then former Surry Central pitcher Hunter Smith came on in relief. He threw two innings and gave up just one run.

He pitched well, said Collins.

Then in the ninth inning, former Greyhound Caleb Whitaker took the mound.

The defense collapsed and gave up two unearned runs, Collins said. That gave Danville some breathing room at 5-2, and the Knights couldn’t rally in the last at-bat.

Keon Holt hit the ball hard in this game, Collins said. Holt was productive in all three games, as were Kyle Aldred and Taylor Reeves.

The Knights will host Montreat on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Then they have another three-game series lined up for this weekend at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia. The doubleheader starts Saturday at 1 p.m. with the third game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
