County residents will have the opportunity to get rid of some of their more dangerous waste next month, as the Surry County Public Works Department hosts a hazardous waste pick-up event.

The pick-up will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy on Oct. 27.

Officials with the public works department note that all containers must be labeled, with all lids closed tightly. Any waste brought to the site in glass bottles must be cushioned.

During this year’s Household Hazardous Waste and Pesticide Collection event, accepted items include paints, paint stripper, pesticides, weed killers, drain solvents, gasoline, dry cell batteries, oil, acids, thinners, solvents, antifreeze and pool chemicals.

Public works officials will not take ammunition, radioactive materials, unidentified materials, explosives, medicine and syringes, propane gas or propane gas cylinders, infectious waste or automotive batteries.

This event is for household waste only, and no commercial waste will be accepted during the pickup.

For more information, call the Surry County Public Works Department at 401-8376.

This year’s pick-up is sponsored by the public works department, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
