In a matter of routine business, the Surry County Board of Commissioners has given the nod to new road names in the county.
According to county Tax Administrator Michael Hartgrove, North Carolina statute allows the board to name all public and private roads in the county, but he noted that the current action involves only private roads that were named last year.
“These are only ‘ways,’ ‘lanes’ and ‘trails,’” he said, noting that 24 private roads were either named or renamed during the past fiscal year.
The statute mandates that each year the board adopt road names issued during the previous year, and hold a public hearing on the matter.
No one spoke during the hearing.
On a motion by Commissioner Jimmy Miller and with a second by Commissioner Eddie Harris, the motion to approve the new names passed unanimously, with Commissioner Garry Scearce absent.
