The 38th North Carolina Troops, Company B, will be at Horne Creek Living Historical Farm in Pinnacle this weekend to provide visitors with a taste of what life was like during the Civil War era.

This new program at Horne Creek will take place on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no entry fee for the event; organizers are just asking for donations to help fund further programs at the historical site.

Activities for the day will include an encampment; drill; recruitment; talks about Civil War era clothing and flags; bobbin lace making; kid’s drill; and demonstrations of mail, pay, and ration calls. There will also be a three-gun salute in honor of the Hauser sons who served during the Civil War. The Hauser family owned the Horne Creek property.

“It’s for everybody,” said Lisa Turney, Horne Creek Farm site manager.

During the kid’s drill, young people will get to march with the reenactors from the group. Cooking demonstrations will also be held at the event, and food will be available to purchase.

If it rains, the event will be canceled.

With nice weather, Turney would expect to have a few hundred visitors. She said this is the amount that usually comes to first-time programs at the farm.

A War Between the States Living History Reenacting Group, the 38th North Carolina Troops portray and honor the memory of the American Civil War soldier. The groups says it pursues unit pride through drill, authenticity and knowledge, while passing on Southern heritage to future generations. Their purpose is to preserve the history of North Carolina’s role in the war and to portray the men and women who lived, served, suffered and died during the period of 1860 through 1865.

The 38th North Carolina Troops took part in the recent cornshucking event at Horne Creek, and Turney said she hopes to have the group back for more events in the future. Turney said the troop should have around 15 to 20 members at the event this Saturday.

Horne Creek Farm is an agency of the Division of N.C. Historic Sites and is under the Department of Cultural Resources. It is located off of U.S. 52. Visitors take the Pinnacle exit, number 129, and follow the state historic signs.
