DOBSON — Surry Central got a late rally from Kennedy Dockery to pull ahead of North Surry on the way to a 6-3 tennis win.
The Lady Greyhounds took the top two spots Wednesday, a continuation of a match postponed by rain from Aug. 23.
The Lady Eagles won matches three, five and six for a 3-2 advantage.
If North won the fourth slot, the teams would be tied 3-3 going into doubles. If Central won, the Eagles would have a dominant 4-2 lead.
Dockery had a lead on Chantel Davis before the rain fell last month. She finished off the first set 6-4.
Davis then made a push and looked like she might force a tiebreaker. She led 4-3.
Then Dockery responded by taking four of the next five games for a 6-4, 7-5 win.
When everyone else is finished, and only one match is left, that is a stressful time for the players, said Central Coach Dennis Miller. Dockery and Davis had several sets of eyes on them.
There was an even bigger crowd watching the last doubles match.
Central’s Marlee Wilmoth and Sommer Chilton battled evenly with North’s Harriette Blackburn and Chainey Kuykendall.
After 20 games, the sides were tied 10-10. In a tiebreaker, North Surry pulled out a 9-7 win with all the teammates and parents looking on.
Blackburn earned a win in both singles and doubles. She beat Wilmoth in the second-seed match 6-3, 6-4.
In the top match, North’s Sarah Glasco beat Savannah Wilson 6-2, 6-1. Wilson got some revenge in doubles as she and partner Megan Gillespie beat Glasco and Davis 10-6.
Gillespie beat Kuykendall 6-2, 6-2 in singles.
Central’s Mikayla Cox won 6-0, 6-2 over Abby Lawson. Cox then teamed with Dockery for a 10-4 doubles win over Lakin East and Jazzmyn Pugh.
Central’s Abby Samuels won 6-2, 6-1 over East in the sixth-seed match.
This was the second win in as many days for the Eagles.
On Tuesday, Central beat South Stokes 8-1.
Wilson beat Gina Rutledge 6-4, 7-5. Wilmoth topped Tori Everly 6-3, 6-2.
Gillespie won over Jenny Glidewell 6-1, 6-1. Dockery beat Julie Linville 6-4, 6-2.
Cox swept Kristen Denny 6-0, 6-0. Samuels topped Kaitlyn Denny 7-5, 6-0.
In doubles play, Samuels and and Cassie Hoge earned an 8-6 win over Rutledge and Everly.
Malory Wilmoth and Olivia Fowler lost 5-8 to Glidewell/Linville.
Sommer Chilton and Madison White won 8-3 over the Denny sisters.
Miller said he was really proud of Marlee Wilmoth Tuesday.
She had suffered through a couple of rough matches, he noted. On Tuesday, however, she had that bounce back in her step and seemed to be enjoying playing again.
The teams are back in action today. North Surry travels to Mount Airy, while Central hosts North Stokes.
