DOBSON — Mount Airy Board of Education Chairperson Wendy Carriker filed to run again with the Surry County Board of Elections office on Monday.

Carriker has served on the city school board for 16 years and has been the chairperson since 2006.

“I just feel it’s important to give back to the community and to serve the children, because they are the ones that we represent,” said Carriker.

She said she also filed to be able to support Mount Airy City Schools Superintendent Dr. Greg Little and the school system’s staff.

“I want to be able to support them and allow them to do the work that they have to do,” said Carriker.

Carriker said she was previously undecided about running again, but after spending last week at the Victory Junction Camp, her mind was made up to run. The camp serves children living with serious medical conditions.

“Working with children is very important. Children need a voice,” said Carriker.

Every two years, the board elects a chairperson. The decision is made during the board’s first meeting following the November election.

There are four seats open on the Mount Airy City Schools board this year. So far, board members Kate Appler and Phil Thacker have filed for their seats. The other seat is that of board member David Rowe. He had not filed for the seat as of Monday.
