PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry and South Stokes battled through a scoreless first half, but the Cardinals broke free in the second half for a 4-0 win.

The Cards drew first blood 12 minutes into the second half thanks to a penalty kick that Brayan Gomes converted.

Five minutes later, East earned another penalty kick, and Austin Haymore scored for a 2-0 lead.

“South Stokes is a hard-nosed, tough team,” said Coach Bill Hart. “I felt fortunate to finally crack their defense.”

In the 30th minute of the second half, Ethan Atkins passed to Gomes for the third score.

With five minutes left in the match, Jimmy Speer found Eric Torres for a goal.

Eric’s birthday is today, so he was giving himself an early present, joked Hart.

East Surry improved to 5-2 and evened their mark in the Northwest Conference at 1-1. The Cards travel to Surry Central on Thursday.
