East Surry got two early goals from Brayan Gomez and kept the pressure on to beat North Surry 7-2 Tuesday.

Gomez got behind the defense twice in the first few minutes. On the first, he moved from the left wing to the center before playing the ball. On the second, keeper Angel Luna came out to challenge, and Gomez was able to bloop the ball over Luna’s head.

Gomez would finish with four goals. Eric Torres scored another goal, and Jimmy Speer and Austin Haymore each converted a free kick.

East’s Souli Boutis provided two assists, while Ethan Atkins and Cole Casstevens had one each.

Caleb Ramey scored North’s first goal of the game. Then late in the second half, Hector Zubieta rifled a ball into the goal.

That shot nearly tore the net off the posts, exclaimed East Coach Bill Hart.

“Coming off a loss, this was a really good bounce-back game,” said Hart. “My guys seemed a lot more focused. They played hard.”

Getting those two early goals seemed to give the team a boost of confidence, the coach believed.

East improved to 3-2-1 in the Northwest Conference, even in wins with Bishop McGuinness, which is where the Cards travel next.

North Surry falls to 2-5, but hosts winless South Stokes on Thursday and plays another winless team, Winston-Salem Prep, next week.
