HILLSVILLE, Va. — A Cana man was jailed without privilege of bond this week after officers investigating a break-in located him with the help of a tracking dog.

Joey Allen Dalton, 37, whose exact address in Cana was not available, is charged with felonious breaking and entering and petty larceny in connection with an incident at a residence in the Orchard Gap community.

The unidentified homeowner discovered the break-in on Monday, which had occurred while he was away.

Deputy Brian Felts of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded and determined that a suspect had entered the home by pulling out a window frame to gain access to a back bedroom.

Several items in the home had been moved and a firearm was stolen along with several knives.

Deputy Felts issued a be-on-the-lookout alert regarding the break-in, and the Virginia State Police responded to the scene with a K-9 unit. The dog led officers on a trail from the victim’s residence to a mobile home park nearby.

Meanwhile, two other Carroll officers — Deputy Gary Bourne and Investigator Donnie Spangler — located the suspect, Dalton, along a roadside near the mobile home park.

Several items from the crime scene were located on the Cana man, who confessed to breaking into the residence.

After further inquiries, Investigator Kevin Kemp obtained additional felonious breaking and entering and grand larceny warrants against Dalton stemming from a July 16 incident on Bear Trail.

Dalton was incarcerated in New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond, pending an arraignment.
