The name of a man killed in a single-car accident Saturday night on N.C. 89 at Lowgap has been released, along with other details regarding the apparent circumstances leading to the wreck.
Dave Carl Call Jr., 49, of 3244 Poplar Knob Road, Galax, Va., died after the Chevrolet Corvette he was driving left the roadway near N.C. 89’s intersection with Lumber Plant Road about 7:45 p.m. The vehicle then overturned into the parking lot of the former Lowgap Elementary School, now used as a community center/library.
Call, who was traveling alone, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
In updating information Sunday surrounding the accident, Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said that speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, as first reported.
However, a sudden turn instead seems to have been the cause of the rollover accident, he said.
While westbound on N.C. 89 toward Galax, Call is thought to have abruptly veered into the parking lot of the former school for some reason.
“It struck a split-rail fence and then turned over in the parking lot,” Shelton said. It seemed as if the driver “decided at the last moment” to head into the lot, he added.
Saturday night’s incident marked the third traffic fatality in Surry County this Labor Day weekend.
A couple from Elkin died as a result of a collision Friday night on Zephyr Road near Dobson.
