DOBSON — A 12-year-old Dobson boy is facing a total of five juvenile charges, four of them felonies, after police say he broke into Rockford Elementary School Saturday evening.

According to Sheriff Graham Atkinson, police were alerted to the crime Monday morning when staff arrived at the Rockford Road school.

Police, who declined to identify the suspect due to his age, said the boy used a decidedly low-tech approach to entering the school.

“He had thrown a rock through a window, and was apparently in the school for several hours,” Atkinson said, noting that at the time of the crime the school’s alarm had not been activated.

Atkinson said that in spite of the amount of time the boy spent inside the school, the school suffered no major damage.

The boy instead spent his time collecting and stealing six Dell laptops, as many as two dozen flash drives and $15 to $20 in change from one teacher’s room. He also boarded several school buses and stole the fire extinguishers from them.

The sheriff said detectives were able to identify the boy Monday, and recovered five of the computers and 12 flash drives.

Juvenile petitions were issued Tuesday, charging the boy with breaking and entering, larceny, the possession of stolen goods and the breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, all felonies.

In addition, the boy has been charged with injury to real property.
