A Mount Airy man for whom a Silver Alert had been issued was found dead Friday morning, according to city police.

The body of William Henry “Doc” Edmonds, 75, who lived at 834 Willow St.-C, was discovered around 10 a.m. in a small ravine near his home.

Investigators believe the man fell into the ravine — located near Reece Sheet Metal Works at 825 Willow St. — shortly after leaving his wife’s residence at 834 Willow St.-D late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The spot where Edmonds’ body was located is about a half-mile from his residence. And though it is along some railroad tracks, police said his death was not train-related. Edmonds, who would have turned 76 on Nov. 19, required mobility assistance and used a walker, which had been left at his residence.

Foul play is not suspected in the disappearance of the man, who had been described as possibly suffering from dementia or another cognitive impairment. However, police have requested that an autopsy and toxicology examination be performed on the deceased. The results of the autopsy are not expected until next week.

Police did not indicate who made the discovery Friday.

The Silver Alert was issued for Edmonds in order to quickly disseminate descriptive information about the missing endangered person, so that citizens in the affected area could be on the lookout and notify law enforcement with any relevant details. Such alerts are coordinated through a statewide network.
