Bishop McGuinness beat North Surry for the second time in two weeks, wrapping up the Northwest Conference Tournament 41-36 Friday night.
The Lady Greyhounds went 17-2 against conference foes this season, but both losses came against the Lady Villains.
At one point in early January, the Villains were just 7-5 with back-to-back losses to East Surry and North Surry. Since then, however, Bishop has gone 12-2.
In the prior meeting Feb. 8, Bishop held North Surry to just 10 first-half points in a 36-29 win.
On Friday, North again scored just 10 points in the first half as Bishop led by seven at the break.
Jordan Badgett’s three-point play with 4:25 left in the first quarter put the Hounds up 3-2, but Bishop scored the last seven points for a 9-3 lead.
In the second quarter, Kristina Rumplasch hit a three-pointer to cut the lead in half, but Bishop would go up 17-10 by halftime.
Rumplasch missed a few three-pointers in the period. The shots were straight, but just a little long or short.
She kept shooting to open the third and made three straight three-point baskets for the Hounds, cutting a 10-point lead to 23-21 with less than three minutes in the third quarter.
Bishop then drew three straight shooting fouls and went up 29-23 at the end of the quarter.
Malaya Johnson found Erin March in the lane for a layup, then Rumplasch skipped a pass over the zone defense to March for a 15-foot jumper as North cut the lead to 29-25 a minute into the fourth quarter.
Bishop called a timeout with 6:50 left to settle down the players.
Then Julia Brown scored twice in transition to push the lead back up to eight points. She made two foul shots with 4:18 left to make it 35-25.
Badgett scored twice and March once as the Hounds drew closer at 37-31.
Rumplasch hit a three and a bank shot in the lane, but the Hounds could only get to within five points.
Rumplasch finished with five threes and 17 total points. March had eight and Badgett seven.
Johnson had just four points as the Villains double-teamed her all night, but she did rack up assists passing to open teammates.
Brown led Bishop with 15 points, Cameron Nieters had seven and Danielle Nieters came off the bench to provide eight points.
Olivia Defrancesco, who scored 17 against Winston-Salem Prep in the semifinals, scored seven points.
After the game, Defrancesco was named most outstanding player of the tournament. Brown and Cameron Nieters were named to the all-tournament team.
For North Surry, Badgett and Rumplasch made the tournament team.
From the semifinal teams, Surry Central’s Courtney Hegler and Prep’s Celia Tibbs were named to the tourney team.
