DOBSON — Volunteers from BB&T Blue Ridge Burke Insurance constructed a playground at the Pfc. Adam L. Marion Children’s Resource Center recently.
“We wanted to work with the Children’s Center because of the great work they do in Surry County,” said Mary Ann Watson, assistant agency manager at BB&T Blue Ridge Burke. “We’re proud to team up with them and help in any way we can.”
The resource center is part of the Children’s Center of Surry Inc. Families utilize the resource center for parenting classes, family-oriented activities and the Supervised Visitation Program.
Erika Linares, coordinator for the Surry Supervised Visitation Program, has made use of the new playground. “It’s great to have an option for our families,” said Linares. “Now the families can either use the visitation area or the playground.”
Linares went on to tell of a very happy participant who recently enjoyed the new playground. “One of our families chose to spend their visitation time at the playground. During the visit, the family’s young child came up to me and said, ‘Wow! I want a playground just like this at my house!’ It was great to see her enjoy it so much.”
The BB&T volunteers took part in the company’s fourth annual Lighthouse Project. The teams have each selected a project to assist a non-profit agency to complete during May or June to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need. BB&T hopes its efforts encourage others in the community to volunteer their time and support organizations such as the Children’s Center of Surry.
BB&T associates have donated more than 150,000 hours in volunteer service and affected the lives of more than 5 million people as part of the BB&T Lighthouse Project, since its inception in 2009. Associates overwhelmingly voted to bring back the initiative this year. For more information about the Lighthouse Project, go to www.bbt.com/bbt/lighthouseproject.
