An armed robbery took placed Sunday evening at Kiser Grocery on Old U.S. 52, just outside of Pilot Mountain.

“No one was injured,” said Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson, but additional details were sketchy Sunday night.

The robbery occurred between 5:30 and 6 p.m., the sheriff said, but he declined to release additional information until the on-site investigation was completed.

“We’re still trying to piece stuff together,” he said. The sheriff said the amount taken from the store had not yet been determined.

“There were at least two” people in the store at the time, though Atkinson said he wasn’t sure if both were workers. He also did not know if customers may have been in the store at the time.

“The Pilot Mountain police department arrived there after the call and secured the scene until we arrived,” Atkinson said. After that, deputies began working the scene until a sheriff’s office detective arrived to oversee the investigation.

“It’s not unusual to see things like this pick up closer to the holidays,” the sheriff said. “As we get closer to the holiday season, clerks should be very careful, watching and reporting suspicious behavior to us as soon as they can. If someone comes in and they feel intimated, if there’s something that’s not right, they should go ahead and call us right then,” Atkinson said. “I would a whole lot rather for us to run out and it turns out to be nothing than to wait too long and for someone to be hurt, or lose property, when it could have been prevented.
