Area soccer teams advance in playoffs

Mount Airy and Surry Central advanced in the first round of the soccer playoffs, along with several other area teams.

The Granite Bears and Golden Eagles will be in action again Saturday, as will East Surry, which received a first-round bye.

Bishop McGuinness (11-9-2) beat Gray Stone Day 3-2 in overtime and will face East Montgomery (14-4-3), which had a bye.

East Surry (11-8-1) will host North Moore (11-4-1), who defeated Monroe 3-2.

Elkin (12-6) had a bye and will host the winner of West Wilkes and Avery, which was not reported by press time.

In the 2A playoffs, Surry Central (16-2-2) will travel to Salisbury (17-2-1).

West Stokes (17-4-2), the Northwest Conference champs, defeated Lexington 4-0 and will face Forbush (17-1-2), who beat Randleman 3-2.

Starmount lost to West Davidson. Ashe County vs. Central Davidson was not available at press time.
