County Republicans are urging the public to join them for a GOP Candidate’s Rally to help raise support in advance of this year’s elections.

The event will feature federal, state and local candidates, according to organizer and candidate for re-election to the Board of Commissioners Paul Johnson.

Johnson said the goal of the event is to raise awareness about this year’s election.

“We’re just trying to raise the interest in this year’s important election a little bit higher than it has been,” he said. “A lot of people have been asking why we haven’t had a Republican event, so some of us local candidates decided to put it together.”

Johnson added that organizers are expecting about 400 people

The event will feature food, entertainment and brief speeches, including a featured address by Rep. Howard Coble, and will get under way at 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Veterans Park in Mount Airy.

“We’re going to have volunteers bringing horses and wagons to give people rides through the park,” Johnson said. “We’re going to have lots of food, and are planning on having some Christian bands on hand to play some music.”

And voters have a lot of choices to make when they go to the polls on Nov. 6.

On the federal level voters will have the chance to vote for the U.S. president and vice president and the 6th District House of Representatives seat

On the state level, voters will elect the governor, the lieutenant governor, the state auditor, the commissioner of agriculture, the secretary of state, the commissioner of labor and the commissioner of insurance.

Other state offices being filled during the November election include the superintendent of public instruction, the state treasurer, the 90th district seat in the state House of Representatives and the 30th district seat in the senate.

Local seats up for re-election include the Surry County register of deeds, the east district seat on the board of commissioners, and two seats on the board of commissioners representing Mount Airy.

In addition, voters will elect representatives to the Elkin and Mount Airy Boards of Education, a representative to the state Supreme Court, three seats on the court of appeals and one seat on the state district court.
