Young should consider local law career

To the Editor,

As a long-time resident of Surry County (just 81 years) I want to encourage all young men and young ladies of Surry County to consider a career in law enforcement.

With Chief Dale Watson in charge of the Mount Airy Police Department and Sheriff Graham Atkinson at the helm of our sheriff’s department we have the absolute best management/leadership team we have had since the change to a professional law enforcement concept.

Prior to that the local attitude was “if you can’t find employment as a taxi driver then you became a law enforcement officer.” You could buy the sheriff for a gallon of liquor per month or a city police officer for paying the doctor/hospital bill for a newborn baby.

In that infamous era the Granite City was known as “Little Chicago.”
