Flag a symbol of hate

To the Editor,

The Confederate flag, also referred to as the white man’s flag by the man who created it, is a symbol of hate. One can call it celebrating a heritage if one chooses, but that heritage is of buying, selling and torturing people. The flag on the grounds of the South Carolina state Capitol was installed in 1962 in a move to resist desegregation.

Gun violence is on schedule in our country to kill more people this year than traffic accidents. That is cause for deep and profound sadness, not exploiting a horrible tragedy, but trying to find ways to prevent the inevitable next one from happening.
