Sharon Penn Mount Airy Black History Month is a reminder that when you look all the way back to the American Revolution, we were here — and we were fighting. The first man who was shot then was an African-American. We have been ingrained with the history of this country from the start.


Elder Billie King Mount Airy It’s important to celebrate ourselves and our historic people — our scientists, teachers, restaurant workers, everybody. It’s important that we celebrate each other. We are black and we are part of the world and we have been a part of making this world. And we are part of the foundation of this country.


Dante Chambers Mount Airy Because we had leaders who fought for our rights, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. To have a Black History Month, it helps us remember where we came from — it makes us appreciate what we have today because of that. It allows our kids to keep up with that history.


Lynn Ceasar Mount Airy I think it’s important to celebrate Black History Month because this is a topic that is underrepresented. And I think that it’s something people need to be educated about, and that education stands out one month out of the year.
