To the Editor,
As a Christian and an American I strongly disagree with the cartoon featured on your Editorial page on September 11, 2015.
The drawing depicted a freed Rowan County clerk Kim Davis holding up hands in victory with Presidential candidate Governor Mike Huckabee and Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. It was at a news conference after she was freed from jail for her personal refusal to issue homosexual marriage licenses at the Kentucky courthouse where she works.
First of all, only Congress can create laws. The recent Supreme Court decision on homosexual marriages is only their opinion. It did not create any law. This seems to be lost in the media and is unconstitutional. At the time Kim Davis refused to validate same sex marriages there was no U.S. or Kentucky law that directed her to do so. There still is no such law.
Secondly, the United States is a republic form of government. It is not a democracy, which has been so wrongly asserted for so long that people feel like it is fact.
Thirdly, to depict Sayyid Ali Khamenei in a cartoon on the anniversary of September 11 wearing a “Theocracy” shirt and equate that with persons defending the First Amendment is an affront to all Christians and freedom loving Americans. He is Supreme Leader of Iran where there are murders, atrocities, persecution and false imprisonment committed against Christians and Americans.
