The North Surry 7-on-7 Jamboree was held Monday evening at North Surry High School.
Joining the Greyhounds in the event were East Surry, West Stokes, Forbush, North Forsyth, Ashe County, North Wilkes and East Gaston.
The 7-on-7 focuses on throwing and pass defense with no linemen except the center on offense. Four teams took the field at Charles Atkins Stadium, while the other four used the practice field.
Football season is just under two months away. North Surry opens Aug. 22 at Ashe County. The Greyhounds, led by Danny Lyons, posted a 4-7 overall record in 2013.
Even though it’s early in the summer, North had a great turnout for the jamboree.
“It was a good night,” Lyons said. “All of our players were here. We got to throw the ball around a little bit. We felt like we got better today. This group wants to be successful.”
North started the event against North Forsyth while East Surry went up against Forbush. There were a few coaching connections at the jamboree. Forbush head coach Chris Johnson is a former Mount Airy defensive coordinator, and East Gaston coach Sean Joyce is a former assistant at Surry Central.
Lyons said last year North started with three teams before the word spread and coaches started emailing him about taking part.
“Hopefully all the schools are getting something out of it,” he said.
East Surry (11-3 last season) opens Aug. 22 at home against Surry Central (5-7 a year ago).
Up next for the Greyhounds is a camp at Catawba College on July 14-16. North returns for the West Stokes 7-on-7 on July 17.
Mount Airy (9-4 last year) kicks off the season Aug. 22 against Starmount. The Bears have a 7-on-7 Jamboree scheduled for July 31.
