PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry scored 11 unanswered runs and held on to beat West Stokes 11-9 in summer baseball on Wednesday night at Barry Hall Field.
Blake Marion got East on the scoreboard with a two-run double. East would score another run on an error, and Carson Cheek hit an RBI single to make it 4-0. Joshua Sawyers doubled, Lucas Koons drove in a run with a base hit, and East scored another run off an error for a six-run lead.
East, coached by Chad Freeman, tacked on five more runs, capped off by Carson Long’s two-run single to left-centerfield.
Tyler Smith started on the hill for East, which defeated Surry Central a night earlier at home.
West, held off the scoreboard for most of the game, came to life late off East lefty Wyatt Guy and then Long, a right-hander.
West scored nine runs in a shaky final inning for East — six off RBI singles, one off an error, and two on bases-loaded walks.
The summer school baseball schedule allows teams to develop its younger players in a more laid-back environment than Legion baseball or travel ball. With East making a deep postseason run during the spring, the Cardinals didn’t start summer ball until Monday against Walkertown. East went 31-2 and finished the state runner-up in this year’s 1A baseball state championship.
East Surry is at West Stokes on Monday night.
Also on Wednesday night, Surry Central was scheduled to play at North Stokes. Central is at South Stokes today. RJ Reynolds and Forbush were also on Central’s schedule earlier this summer.
