MURPHY — North Stokes couldn’t punch its ticket to the state 1A softball championship Thursday night.

The Lady Vikings were defeated by Hiwassee Dam Thursday night 3-1 in the second game of the NCHSAA’s 1A Regional series.

The Vikings won the first game of the best-of-three series at home 4-1. Then on the road, the team lost to even the series 1-1.

North Stokes hosts the third and final game of the series today at 6 p.m.

The game was scoreless through four innings before the Vikings broke through for one. However, the home team retaliated with three runs of their own.

According to Coach Jeff Frye his team missed several balls they could have hit and should have played better defense.

“We’ll come into Saturday’s game prepared. We’re going to have fun and win,” he said.

The winner of today’s game will play in the state championship best-of-three series June 6-7 at the Walnut Creek softball complex in Raleigh.
