PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Lady Cardinals batted around in the second inning and blasted Walkertown 16-1 in four innings.

East Surry and Walkertown were vying for second place and a first-round bye in the Northwest Conference Tournament next week.

Now the Lady Wolfpack host Atkins on Monday with the winner advancing to face East Surry on Wednesday in Pilot Mountain.

On the other side of the brackets, North Stokes is the top seed and awaits the winner of Mount Airy and Bishop. The Lady Bears will host that game on Monday, then East Surry is the host school for the semifinals and final.

In Friday’s game, the Cards broke through in the first inning with three runs.

With one out, Olivia Sheets hit a bouncer to second. The fielder missed the ball, and Sheets alertly kept running all the way to second.

An out later, Emily Cummings slammed a liner all the way to the fence in center for an RBI double.

Laken Bowman singled in Cumming’s courtesy runner and took second on the throw home.

Bowman stole third and trotted home on a throwing error to make it 3-0.

In the second inning, the Cards scored 10 runs.

Brooke Bowman walked, Sarah Moore singled to center to put runners at the corners.

Kelsey Martin hit a hard ball to third, but it didn’t bounce up and slid under the glove to let Bowman in.

A wild pitch put Moore on third and Martin on second. Sheets followed with a triple to score both for a 6-0 lead.

Amber Lawson doubled down the left-field line to score Sheets.

Cummings, who just missed a homer in her first at-bat, got under this one a little more and landed the ball in the parking lot beyond the right-center fence. That made it 9-0.

Laken Bowman hit a popup near second that fell between three fielders. Then she stole second and scored off a single to left by Lauren Sechrist.

Brooke Whittington singled in Sechrist.

Moore hit a long fly to right that popped out of the fielder’s glove to put two aboard.

Jesse Barr singled in Whittington, then Katie Simpson singled in Moore for a 13-0 lead.

The visitors scored once in the third, but East put up three runs in the fourth as the game ended early.
