DOBSON — Freshman Michael Roberts stole the show on Surry Central’s Senior Night.
The Eagles’ third baseman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Central to a 4-3 win over Forbush in Western Piedmont 2A Conference baseball on Thursday night.
Central (13-9 overall, 6-3 WPC) recognized seniors Forest Kimbrell, Brett Mosley, Samuel Harris, Jorge Rivera, Kaden Leonard, Cole Fowler, Jake Wilmoth and Jess Wilmoth prior to the game.
Forbush starter Brad Dzeskewicz held the Eagles’ bats in check for most of the evening. But in the bottom of the seventh, he walked two with the bases loaded to allow Central to tie it 3-3 going into extra innings.
Central lefty Kaden Leonard allowed a couple of Forbush baserunners in the top of the eighth, but the Falcons couldn’t cash in.
Dzeskewicz gave way to Brett Fulk in the eighth. Roberts took the first pitch over the fence in left field for the walk-off victory.
Forbush got its first run in the top of the third inning. Bryson Lee doubled with two outs off Central starter Cole Fowler. He scored on an RBI single from Neil Hutchens.
Central evened things up on a solo home run from Brett Mosley in the bottom of the fifth.
The Falcons threatened to go ahead in the top of the sixth inning when Mason Doub doubled down the left field line and Jack Crews drew a one-out walk from Fowler. Central coach Matt Scott brought in Leonard, who got the next batter to groundout on a 6-4-3 double play.
Forbush went ahead 3-1 off Fulk’s two-RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Central wasn’t about to go away easily on Senior Night.
In the bottom of the seventh, Stephen Bruner reached on an error, Kimbrell had a one-out base hit, and Fowler singled to load the bases. Jess Wilmoth and Leonard drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to even the score.
Leonard got the win for the Eagles and Fulk took the loss for Forbush, which fell to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the league.
The Eagles travel to West Stokes tonight to close out the regular season.
