PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry took care of business with a doubleheader sweep of Atkins in softball Friday night.

The Lady Cardinals won 15-0 in three innings in both games.

The two wins were a welcomed sight after a tough loss to North Stokes on Thursday.

Coach Randy Marion gave his two usual pitchers, Emily Cummings and Laken Bowman, the night off.

Instead, Serena Pickens and Amber Brown each pitched three no-hit innings for the wins.

With the games ending early on the mercy rule, the Cards needed just nine outs. Pickens struck out eight of the nine batters she faced for a perfect game. Brown struck out seven, with her only baserunner coming when she hit a batter.

In the first game, Cummings hit a grand slam, and Katie Simpson went 3 for 3 with two singles and a double.

There were a lot of walks and bunts in the second game, noted Marion, as the Cards again scored 15 runs.

East scored 30 runs in one day after failing to score in a 7-0 loss to the Lady Vikings the day before.

North Stokes is really good, but the girls also just missed on a couple of long balls, the coach noted.

Amber Lawson was 2 for 3 with a single and double, and Cummings was 1 for 3 with a double. Both of those doubles were balls that hit the fence, coming up just short of getting home runs, he said.

The Vikings got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. They led 6-0 after four innings and finished with seven runs off 10 hits and one East Surry error. The Vikings also drew seven walks in the game.

The Cards will get another crack at the Vikings on Wednesday at home.

First up is a game at home with Walkertown on Tuesday. This will be Senior Night for Amber Lawson, Sarah Moore and Lauren Sechrist.

* East Surry’s baseball team also played Atkins on Friday. Like the girls, the boys finished the game early on the mercy rule.

The Cards scored three runs in the first, 12 in the second and five in the third inning for a 20-0 win.

That also happens to be the Cards’ record, 20-0, as the team continues to extend its school record for the best start to a season.
