East Surry posted four players on the Northwest All-Conference team for golf, and Mount Airy had two players and the coach of the year.
In his second season at the helm, the Bears’ Mark Hiatt tied in the coach of the year vote amongst the coaches. In a re-vote, Mount Airy edged out conference-leading Bishop McGuinness for the honor.
Conference player of the year is determined by scoring average. Bishop senior Tanner Owen, who has committed to Wake Forest, took his third-straight league title; he squeaked by teammate Reilly Erhardt by just one stroke over the course of the entire season.
Owen and Erhardt were joined on the all-conference team by Villains Zach Shields, Kevin Sowinski and Jonathan Davis.
East Surry’s four players were Jordan Vogler, Joseph Marion, Brock Jessup and Dustin Hutchens.
Mount Airy’s Bailey Bouma and Ryan Fitzgibbons made the cut.
Atkins’ top seed, Ryan Lantz, was the only member on the team from either Atkins, North Stokes or Walkertown.
For the purposes of season scoring average, a player’s lowest score is dropped, then the average is taken from the remainder.
East’s Jack Edwards was on the bubble, but came up one stroke short. His teammate Hutchens was ranked lower this season, but a 53 at Atkins was cut, giving Hutchens the better mark after that.
Next up for the golfers is the 1A West Regional Tournament at Cedarbrook Country Club on May 5.
