Seth Brim and Cody Ashburn combined on a two-hit, five-inning shutout as East Surry defeated East Wilkes, 14-0, in the second game of the ALS Benefit in Memory of Craig Hunter event at Mount Airy High School Saturday.
Brim threw 37 pitches, allowing one hit, walking none, and striking out four through three innings. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
Tyler Marion, who also is a starting pitcher in the Cardinals’ rotation, added four RBI with two hits and a sacrifice fly.
“They may be the best team in the state,” East Wilkes coach Todd Welborn said. “They hit. They’re just a better team than we are.”
East Surry improved to 16-0, while East Wilkes fell to 4-12.
“This is my 40th year,” East Surry coach Barry Hall said, “and I’ve never had a team get off to this start.”
Hall said players who were with him both last year and this year have won 35 of their last 37 games.
“Basically what this shows is pitching, defense, and timely hitting,” Hall said. “A coach is pretty happy to have one of them. If you have two of them, you’re pretty good. He gets three of them, you’re going to win a bunch of games.
“We’re just on a roll right now. Unless I mess them up, they’re going to be all right.”
While Saturday was about baseball, it wasn’t just baseball. East Surry wore shirts with “In Memory of Craig Hunter” on the back. Hunter was a former school board member and city commissioner who died from ALS on Jan. 13.
“That’s why we started it,” Hall said. “We’re trying to carry it on. It’s a great honor to play in it.”
“We want to help,” Welborn said. “We’ll come back next year. We’re more than happy to be a part of this.”
