MORAVIAN FALLS —Mount Airy suffered a 7-2 nonconference tennis loss at the hands of Wilkes Central late Thursday night.
For the first time this season, the Bears lost consecutive matches in the loss to the Eagles. The loss was also the first this season against a 2A opponent.
The Eagles are the top 2A team in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference which includes Elkin. Mitch Kessler earned the Bears’ their only singles victory. He improved his record to 17-1. In the second set, Will Sparks held the lead until falling behind 3-2. Justin Leonard rallied in the second set from a 4-1 deficit to 4-3. Jack Marion was up 4-3 in the first set.
Gentry Williamson took the early lead in the second set, went down 2-1, and won four games to take a 5-4 lead. He was broken on a serve to go down 6-5. Hunt Harrison rallied in the first set from 4-1 to 4-3.
In doubles, Sparks-Harrison were unable to recover from a 3-0 deficit and suffered only their second loss of the season. Kessler-Leonard led 2-1 and rallied from 4-3 to complete a 7-0 season record. Marion-Williamson led by a break through 4-3.
The Bears finish the regular season 14-4 overall and in second place in the Northwest Conference at 6-2. Mount Airy resumes dual team action in the state playoffs on April 29. The conference tournament begins April 15.
