WALKERTOWN — Tyler Marion pitched a complete game and Madison Chilton homered as East Surry defeated Walkertown 4-1 in Northwest 1A Conference baseball on Friday night.

The Cardinals improved to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.

In the first inning, Logan Sheets singled and advanced on a sacrifice from Weston Payne. Alec Wilson drove in Sheets for a 1-0 East lead.

Chilton led off the sixth with what coach Barry Hall called “a rocket” of a home run. Scott Meredith doubled and Joshua Sawyers scored Meredith with an RBI double.

In the seventh, Marion singled and after a Walkertown error, Cody Ashburn came up with an RBI single.

“We had 13 hits, so we left a few out there,” Hall said. “We didn’t make an error and turned three double plays. Tyler (Marion) had another strong performance for us. He threw 87 pitches.”

Marion, a senior right-hander, improved his record to 5-0. Marion pitched seven innings, allowed five hits (none through the first four innings), had no walks and struck out seven. Travis McCormick of Walkertown took the loss.

East’s pitching staff of Marion, Meredith, Ashburn and Seth Brim have a combined ERA of 1.17 this season.

East, alone atop the Northwest standings, has home contests next week against Mount Airy (Tuesday), South Stokes (Wednesday) and Bishop McGuinness (Friday).

“It was a big win,” Hall said. “The defense has been great and our pitching staff has been unreal. If you only give up one run, you’ve got a chance.”

The Wolfpack fell to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Walkertown hosts Mount Airy for a conference game today at 3 p.m.
