North Surry and Starmount battled to 0-0 tie in the first half before the Lady Rams pulled out a 1-0 win in soccer.
“That was a really good game. I thought it could have gone either way,” said Starmount coach Jered Markman. “It was 80 minutes of fighting, and North put up a great fight.”
The Lady Greyhounds went into the match 0-7, but didn’t play like a winless team. The girls chased down 50/50 balls and made several runs at the goal.
Unfortunately, Ram keeper Amanda O’Donnell stopped several shots.
North Surry earned 13 corner kicks, so Amanda had to make some good saves to stop every attack, the coach said.
On the other end, North’s Maggie Taylor made a few saves herself to stop the Ram attack.
Starmount freshman Claire Maske kept the pressure on.
Claire is a freshman, but she doesn’t usually play like one, said Markman. She provided the assist for the game’s only goal by Katelyn Kauffman.
On Monday, the Hounds travel to West Stokes for a Western Piedmont Conference match. The Rams travel to East Wilkes on Tuesday.
