KERNERSVILLE — Mount Airy tennis was handed just its second loss of the season, falling again to Bishop McGuinness 8-1 in Northwest 1A Conference action late Wednesday.
Except for Bishop’s No. 3 singles seed and the Villains’ No. 1 and 2 doubles teams, the Bears faced different opponents than the first match. Bishop took a 2-0 lead with wins against Justin Leonard and Jack Marion. Will Sparks rallied in the second set of his match but lost a 3-2 lead before falling 7-5.
The Bears (13-2 overall, 5-2 conference) were down 3-0 and their next three losses were determined in third-set tiebreakers. Mitch Kessler rallied from 0-1 in the first set to take a 3-2 lead but two consecutive breaks resulted in a 6-4 loss. He rallied in the second set to a 3-0 lead before finishing 6-2. In the tiebreaker, Kessler was up 3-2, but a series of unforced errors resulted in the 10-5 decision and his only singles loss of the season.
Hunt Harrison took the lead at 3-2 in the second set of his match. He rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the tiebreaker and saved four match points. Gentry Williamson won the first set of his match in a tiebreaker, lost a 3-2 lead in the second set, and rallied from 8-3 in the third-set tiebreaker only to lose 11-9.
Sparks and Marion picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles for Mount Airy’s only team point of the day. The duo is undefeated on the season at 13-0.
Leonard and Sam Brown dropped a tough 8-4 match at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 team of Kessler and Blake Hensley rallied from a 5-2 deficit to within 6-5, but dropped the next two points.
Mount Airy travels to face another tough opponent on Monday when it takes on Elkin. The Buckin’ Elks are currently ranked No. 1 in the 1A tennis polls, just ahead of the Villains, who improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the league. Mount Airy is ranked third.
