The Granite Bears remain perfect in nonconference play after a 9-0 sweep of Forbush Monday.
Mount Airy improved to 13-1 overall and 8-0 outside the Northwest Conference.
The Bears gave up just one game in singles, winning 72-1.
This was the ninth shutout of the season and the sixth victory over a 2A Western Piedmont school, noted Coach Rodney Pell.
Mitch Kessler hasn’t lost a singles match, improving to 14-0 by whitewashing Avery Adams 6-0, 6-0.
As Falcons coach Matt Tuck pointed out during a loss to Surry Central, Forbush has a very young squad with five sophomores and one junior in the starting lineup.
A couple of these guys had never played tennis before coming out this spring, Tuck said.
Justin Leonard won his 12th singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Josh Pearson.
Third seed Jack Marion and sixth seed Gentry Williamson won their 10th matches with sweeps of Tyler Upchurch and Wade Jones.
Will Sparks defeated Winston Fleming 6-0, 6-0, and Hunt Harrison beat Travis Hester 6-1, 6-0.
The Bears were equally good in doubles, taking 24 of 25 games.
Kessler and Blake Hensley won 8-0 over Adams/Pearson. Leonard and Sam Brown won 8-1 over Upchurch/Fleming.
The freshman pair of Sparks and Harrison remain undefeated at 12-0. They won 8-0 over Hester/Jones.
The Bears’ lone loss this season came against conference leader Bishop McGuinness.
Mount Airy will get a chance to avenge that loss with a trip to Kernersville Wednesday.
